Luckily, the child was not harmed in any way.

During the summertime, children are outside playing, walking around, and possibly crossing streets to go to parks or to visit neighbors. This freedom could be dangerous if your children don't know about the threat of strangers.

On Sunday, July 24th, around 10 a.m., a child got in the car with a stranger who asked her to help him look for a dog. The man was Hispanic and driving a gray four-door vehicle.

Despite the number of tragic situations that could have resulted from this, the girl got out of the car just a block away from where she was picked up and went home.

This incident took place on the 800 block of Maryland, just south of 6th Street.

The Amarillo Police is currently investigating the situation. They have encouraged the people of Amarillo to remind their kids about the dangers of interacting with strangers. Over 100 children are kidnapped by strangers or slight acquaintances every year in Texas.

Here are some tips for keeping your kids safe:

  • Teach them to always ask for permission before speaking to or going anywhere with a stranger
  • Avoid putting their names on clothing. If an adult can call a child by his or her name, the child is more likely to trust that adult
  • Supervise your children while they are outside or somewhere like the movies or the mall
