It seems that everywhere you turn someone is on a cell phone.  Even kids have phones.  But at what age should you get your child their first one?

Last month I went into my cell phone provider to upgrade my phone.  Of course, I had my son with me.  The entire time I was in there, the employees kept trying to get me to get my son a phone.  I was shocked.  I told them politely, 'he is only 6, what does he need a phone for?'  But they didn't stop.  They told me that a lot of 6 year olds have phones.

I couldn't believe it.  My son is always with me there is no reason for a cell phone.  Who would he call?  Don't get me wrong, he can use my phone better than I can, but he doesn't need his own.  I kept trying to understand why anyone would buy a 6 year old a phone and I couldn't come up with any reason.

Well, yesterday I came across a survey done by Vouchercloud.  The survey revealed that most kids get their first smartphone by the age of six.  Yes, six!  The reasoning by it was given also.  Thirty-one percent of parents get their child a phone for "security reasons," while twenty-five percent say the phone is for their child to keep in touch with friends and family.

I still have a huge issue with this.  For starters, my son is either at school or with me and if he needs a phone or there is an emergency, I'm sure someone will help him out.  And secondly, my son is six!  He doesn't need to be on the phone with friends and if he wants to talk to family members, he can ask to use my phone or the house phone.

Maybe I'm over reacting.  Is six years old an acceptable age to get a cell phone?  You can look at the other findings of the survey here.
