The only school shooting that has occurred in Amarillo was nearly 20 years ago at Palo Duro High school. Thankfully for the ones present there were no casualties and only a few were injured. Even though it was a long time ago, no one who was there can forget the terrifying and hopeless experience.
After what seemed forever, Amarillo is finally seeing some nice weather again. Though it may be a short while before we can truly be safe from cold weather, spring has technically arrived and soon will summer. Therefore here's a list of ten fun activities to do this spring and upcoming summer of 2014 for everyone.
There's a popular game that is so smart and unique that it's hard not to be amazed by it. The internet game is Akinator, the Web Genius, a game similar to 20 Questions where a cartoon genie tries to guess the name of a character the player is thinking of, being right most of the time.
While many one hit wonders are remembered for their one hit song that put them at the top of the charts, many of them do have other songs that are worth listening to. While there have been some notable failed follow ups (like "Put'em On The Glass" from Sir Mix A Lot, who's best known for "Baby Got Back," and "Dance The Kung Fu" from Carl Douglas, known for "Kung-Fu Fighting) many so called one hit wonders do deserve to be listened to more. Here's a count down of songs from artists that are pretty good and even maybe better than their hit.
There's a new song by a band never really heard on the radio before that is currently at spot 84 in Billboards' Hot 100 list. The song is "Chocolate" by The 1975 from their album Music For Cars. They are an, what else, English Alternative/ Indie Rock band from Manchester. Their song has been a relative success and, while they have other nice songs, "Chocolate" seems to be the only one getting any attention.
Recently the PRO internship classes at Amarillo High School and Palo Duro High school were treated to a formal meal at Amarillo's The Big Texan. As part of Palo Duro PRO, I was invited to go along, making it the first time I've ever gone to both the Big Texan and a luncheon.
Pit Bulls and Parolees, an Animal Planet reality TV show, has recently been renewed for a new season, which will be its fifth since its debut in 2009. The show follows the Villalobos Rescue Center, which is currently stationed in New Orleans, Louisiana, and the founder, Tia Maria Torres, as she rescues Pit Bulls, trains them and searches for their forever home with the help of her family, volunteers and parolees.
Scholastic is currently holding the Drive2Life contest, where students from 6 to 12 grade can make a storyboard or written script depicting a 30-second public service announcement or PSA. It's to spread awareness and prevent impaired-driving situations caused by alcohol, drugs or sleep deprivation. The PSA has to show how teen drivers and passengers can stay away from these situations.
Every year all over the country high school graduates begin to pour into their new college classes, ready for the next important phase of their lives. However with the cost of tuition, books and board, many teens fail or don't bother to apply anywhere, feeling they can't afford to go. Though this was true several decades ago, now many students can receive the full benefit of numerous scholarships and grants available to them that weren't around back then.
