Dog owners beware! Diamond Pet Food has recalled several of its dog food brands due to salmonella contamination.  And it's the pet owners that are getting sick.

Back in April of this year, Diamond Pet Food pulled three brands of dry dog food off the shelves as a precautionary step.  Well, the company has now expanded its recall.

At least 14 people, in nine different states, have been poisoned by a rare strain of salmonella.  Five of them hospitalized.  The cases were found in humans who had contact with the dog food.

The products were sent to 16 different states and Canada.  Cases have been reported in Alabama, Connecticut, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention has been investigating the outbreak and believe that the people are getting sick because they not washing their hands after touching the dog food, cross contamination on cooking utensils, their food being near the dog food, or direct contact with the dog carrying the disease.

WellPet LLC and Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Pet Foods Inc, have also recalled some of their dog food as a precaution.

Now this is only for Diamond's dry dog food, so be careful.  And as you should always do, wash your hands!!
