Famous Landmarks In Amarillo – Kitty’s Top Seven

Clinton Steeds / Flickr

It’s hard to think of Amarillo and not think about the Big Texan and that free 72 oz. steak but there is so much more to our great city than a giant hunk of beef! :) Whether you are up for a long hike, huge roller coaster or a great burger, Amarillo has got something for you. So, here’s my short must see list.

#1. 6th Street

What is now a quaint street to stroll down and shop use to be the main highway through town with thousands of people rolling through Amarillo everyday. Today, things have slowed down and 6th Street is a great place to shop for antiques, eat at a great locally owned restaurant like Cowboy Gelato and even hear live music at one of the many venues like Austin’s Pub.

#2. Coyote Bluff

Courtesty Coyote Bluff

This tiny restaurant packs a big punch and is a must eat if you’re in the mood for a great burger in Amarillo! Coyote Bluff was featured on the Travel Channel’s  “Man vs Food” and is a big favorite among Amarillo locals. It’s a blink and miss it kind of place located at 2417 S. Grand, and ya defiantly want to get there early because people wait in line for these monster burgers. I recommend the Hell Burger with cheese fries… of course:)

#3. Wonderland Park

Facebook / Wonderland Park

Celebrating 60 years in Amarillo this year, Wonderland Park has been providing summer fun for generations of Amarillo families. With roller coasters to kiddie rides, concession stands to mini golf, Wonderland is the place to be for summertime fun. Over 200,000 people visit the park each year as it continues to grow with new ways to have fun and make memories!

#4. Panhandle Plains Historical Museum

Facebook / PPHM

The largest history museum in Texas lives up to hype ! You could spend hours here and still not see everything. Art, archaeology, dinosaurs, fashion and automobiles are just a few of the treasures you’ll find when you explore PPHM. Plan on making a day of it and take a walk around the campus of WTAMU that the museum sits on. There is not a better time for a history buff in the Amarillo and Canyon Area.

#5. Palo Duro Canyon

Palo Duro Canyon is a beautiful landmark located just South of Amarillo. There is so much to do here and if you would like the virtual tour of the park go here. If you love to hike, mountain bike, picnic, take photos, explore caves then you will be in heaven. There is always something new to do here. I have been many times and still find places that I have never seen. It is an amazing and picturesque place located right outside of good ol’ Amarillo.

#6. Cadillac Ranch

Cadillac Ranch has been a long standing tourist attraction/land mark for decades past. Local eccentric and wealthy man,  Stanley Marsh decided to plant his Cadillacs here when he purchased the new model, a landmark was born! After years directly off of Interstate 40 in Amarillo, there are literally thousands of visitors monthly. Over the years they have been painted to reflect everything a person could imagine.

#7. Amarillo’s Painted Horses

Amarillo is also the home of the Painted Statue Horses. You’ll find these painted horses all over town, and it makes for a great scavenger hunt to find all the painted ponies with various themes from patriotic to Marilyn Monroe! If you have driven basically anywhere in Amarillo, I bet you have passed many of them and not even noticed!

Take the opportunity to enjoy some of these local places and landmarks. In the Texas Panhandle we have some great history and places that can really take you back to a place in time that really touch you, as well as some great places just to hang out with good friends and family.
