‘Atari: Game Over’ Trailer Phones Home

Microsoft has released the first trailer for ‘Atari: Game Over’, the first of six documentaries in the Signal to Noise series, which will air exclusively on Xbox consoles this year.

‘Atari: Game Over’ details “The Great Video Game Burial of 1983,” which saw millions of unsold copies of the E.T. Atari 2600 game cartridges buried in the New Mexico desert. The documentary will show the unearthing of the fabled cartridges, as well as interviews with Atari personnel and other industry professionals. Zak Penn, writer of ‘X2: X-Men United’, ‘The Incredible Hulk’ and ‘Marvel’s The Avengers’, will direct the feature.

The remainder of the Signal to Noise series will look at how technological advancements, especially in the gaming world, have impacted our everyday lives. Ironically, the documentary about the near collapse of the gaming industry is being produced by Xbox Entertainment Studios, the recently shuttered broadcast entertainment arm of Microsoft’s Xbox division. Despite the closure, Signal to Noise will continue as planned, along with Steven Spielberg’s ‘Halo‘ series, Ridley Scott’s ‘Halo: Nightfall‘ and Quantum Break, a game with an attached interactive show.
