Now that school is back in session, I don't get to know every single thing my son is doing.  And it is so difficult to get him to talk about it.  So, I have found some different ways to get him talking.  I am going to be honest and say that I am a nosy mom!  I want to know everything that my son is doing, good and bad.  I want to be a part of his school life as much as possible.  So, everyday I pick him up and ask him the same ole question, 'How was school today?'  And I usually get the same ole answer, 'good' or 'fine.'

The problem is, I want to know every detail I can!  I want to know if he is getting along with everyone, is he having any problems learning, what his favorite subject is, does he like his teacher and everything else in between.  So, everyday when I pick him up, I try to think different ways to get him to open up.

I have asked questions like, what was your favorite thing at school today?  What happened today that made you laugh?  I've also asked him what was the best thing about lunch?  And, who in the class does he wish was in a different class and why?

I try to make my questions fun and creative so that I can get him talking.  It has been working great.  This way I know if he is having a problem with another student and why.  I also get to know a little about his interests.

Now my son is in the first grade but this technique could work with any age, you would just have to change up the questions to fit your child.
