Country music legend Glen Campbell has pulled out of his Australian tour with fellow icon Kenny Rogers — and the speculation is that Campbell’s progressing battle with Alzheimer’s is to blame for the last-minute cancellations.

The announcement — which only cites illness as the cause for cancellation — comes just weeks before Campbell was supposed to embark on his last international tour, with the first date scheduled for Aug. 10 in Christchurch, New Zealand. A handful of Australian country stars will replace Campbell on the seven-date outing. A solo set in Brisbane on Aug. 17 will presumably be canceled as well.

Many believed that Campbell would be able to fulfill his touring duties, despite the progression of the debilitating disease. A press release unveiled in preparation for the outing claimed the disease “has not affected his performances.” It is now presumed that Campbell is not well enough to travel the long distance.

“I just take it as it comes, you know,” Campbell said of his daily struggles in an interview in early 2012. “I know that I have a problem with that, but it doesn’t bother me. If you’re going to have it handed to you, you have got to take it, anyway. So that is the way I look at it.”

Kenny Rogers has declined to comment on his ailing friend in recent interviews.
