Hank Williams Jr. closed the 2014 Taste of Country Music Festival with a mix of covers, hits and variations on well-known tracks from his deep catalogue. Thousands filled Hunter Mountain to hear the country music legend, and he didn't disappoint.

After a lengthy acoustic set during which Bocephus went through his history, and by extension the history of country music, Williams Jr. kicked down his mic stand and launched into 'Born to Boogie.' The acoustic set was hardly a slow-down. Covers of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Hank Williams Sr. dotted the set. Each song was just a snippet of the original, often taking liberties on the lyrics to embrace the northern New York stage audience.

Williams drew the loudest applause when he made statements reminding "America haters" to move to Mexico. During his 90-plus minute set he defended true country music more than once, and took at least one swipe at President Obama, which this audience appreciated.

The music -- specifically the last 25 minutes -- was what fans will remember most. It's during this set he played some of his biggest songs, plus covers of ZZ Top, Ted Nugent and Aerosmith. He riffed Lynyrd Skynyrd at one point, and played plenty of his father's music including 'There's a Tear in My Beer.'

Over 40,000 country fans attended the three-day Taste of Country Music Festival in Hunter, N.Y. Next year's headliner was also announced this weekend. Tim McGraw will play the mountain, June 12-14, 2015.
