This isn't a new thing for Amarillo.  We have had earthquakes before.  In fact we had an earthquake in August of 2013 that measured 3.5 on the Richter scale.  We had another in January of 2012 that measured 2.8 on the Richter scale.  This doesn't include the many earthquakes that happened throughout the Texas Panhandle.

In fact earthquakes have happen in this area all the time.   In fact the strongest earthquake to hit this area was on July 30, 1925, it hit in Panhandle and measured 5.4 on the Richter scale.

We are near a fault line called the Amarillo-Wichita Uplift and that is where most of our local earthquakes occur.

So yes, that was an earthquake you might have felt last night.
