American Idol‘ contestant Kree Harrison performed the classic tune ‘Stormy Weather’ on the show Wednesday night (May 1), showcasing her innate ability to effectively deliver a wide array of material.

Harrison chose the song as part of the theme of the night, in which contestants chose one contemporary song from 2013, and one standard. Mentor Harry Connick, Jr. cautioned her about gratuitous vocal pyrotechnics, telling Harrison that the best way to sing a classic is to sing it straight to the melody.

She gave a performance that was an amalgam of her natural instincts and Connick’s advice, seeming to deliberately pull back, but still throwing in a number of vocal runs outside the main theme. The song was a showcase for her naturally resonant timbre and control, but the judges mostly felt that she didn’t quite connect, encouraging her to choose her songs carefully so she can truly shine on material that plays to her natural strengths.

Connick — who said earlier in the show that he would willingly help Harrison with an album if she asked — reiterated that she needed to sing straight to the melody, adding that she simply needed to learn the melody until it was second nature. That caused a strong disagreement between he and Randy Jackson, who kept telling Harrison that she needed to ignore all advice and simply sing the way she sings naturally.

Kree Harrison will learn her fate on the results show Thursday night (May 2).
