Do you ever get tired of spending tons of money on a tiny bottle or even a tiny box of laundry detergent only to turn around and spend more because it is gone already.  One of my pet peeves was spending a ton of money on detergent.  Then one day I ran across a recipe for homemade laundry detergent.  Would it work?  Would it get my clothes clean?  Here's this week's life hack.

Ingredients:

1 4lb box of baking soda
1 4lb box of super washing soda
1 box of 20 Mule Team Borax
3 small containers of Oxiclean (the generic works great)
3 bars of Fels Naptha Laundry Soap (or you can use 2 bars of the Pink Zote)
1 large bottle or 2 small bottles of the scented laundry crystals (optional)
1 bucket
1 trash bag
1 container (I use this one)

Directions:

Grate the Fels Naptha into small pieces.  You can use your cheese grater it won't hurt just make sure you wash it before you grate your cheese.

Next, put the trash bag in your bucket and start adding all the ingredients into the bag.  Once added, pick up the bag and start mixing all the stuff together so it is evenly distributed.  After that is done, cut a hole in a corner of the trash bag and let all the detergent flow into your laundry detergent container.

Use 1-2 Tablespoons per load.

That's it, that will work for a full load of clothes.  Store bought laundry detergent uses a bunch of fillers so you have to use 1/2c - 1c when you use that.

This is everything that will get your clothes clean.

For my family this lasts about 9 months, if you have a larger family you will probably go through 2-3 batches per year.

It is safe for HE washers as well, you may just have to put it in with the clothes or you can put it in the dispenser just make sure you Fels Naptha is grated fine.

The entire batch will run you about $25.
