Martina McBride Supports the Gay Community: ‘I Believe in Acceptance’

Martina McBride has been vocal about her support of the gay community through the years, and now, the songstress is opening up about acceptance — and how her fans have handled her stance.

On ‘Larry King Now’ this week, King brought up the fact that McBride preaches tolerance at home, mentioning a quote from Out magazine in 2009 in which she said, “Honestly, I just have to do what’s right for me, and what I would tell people is what I believe, which is that I feel like tolerance is very important.”

“I have three daughters and that’s what I teach them,” McBride added at the time. “I think we should all be tolerant of each other and embrace each other’s strengths and differences and uniqueness and beauty.”

Although King seemed fairly certain that McBride has suffered repercussions from conservatives within country music because of her stance, she firmly states that was not the case.

“I think that it’s just your own personal morals and values, and like I said, I believe in acceptance,” says the singer, adding, that she doesn’t believe the division of views is only prevalent in country music. “I don’t know that you can generalize like that. Yes, there are people that are not tolerant and accepting … I think that there are people in every kind of music and every walk of life that are conservative, and people that don’t agree with it and people that do agree with it.”

As McBride explains it, her strong fanbase is extremely diverse, so while some may be in support of the gay community, others may not — but she’s proud of her following and she’s glad they stick with her regardless of their personal beliefs.

“I don’t think of my fans as one way,” she says. “I think I have a very diverse group of fans.”

McBride isn’t alone in her stance on acceptance with regard to the gay community. Other country superstars who have stepped up in support of equality include Carrie Underwood, Garth Brooks, Reba McEntireToby Keith and Dolly Parton.
