They have been on the rise here in Amarillo and the Texas panhandle lately, telephone scams! And another has hit the region, this time claiming to be the the City of Amarillo water department.

Here is the release from the Amarillo Police Department:

The Amarillo Police Department has received calls that Amarillo residents have been contacted by a person that claims to represent the City of Amarillo's "water department."  The caller tells the victim that their bill is overdue, and that their water will be cut off unless they pay.  At least one Amarillo resident provided their credit card information to the caller.
This is a fraud.  The city's Utility Billing Office will not ask for financial information over the telephone.  IF you get a call like this, hang up.  As with all telephone fraud scams, never give bank, credit card, or personal information to someone that calls you.  Please help share this information with friends and relatives that may be prone to be victims of this crime.
