Amarillo Independent School District has decided to hold normal classes this Memorial Day to make up for a snow day used back in February. Some parents have made plans to go out of town this holiday, but now their children have to head to school on Monday.

In my opinion, out of respect for the students, they should not have to go to school this upcoming holiday. It could ruin their vacation plans with the family. Students will be released early today for the holiday weekend, but come Monday they will be in class.

AISD has a committee made up of parents, teachers, and staff which review the school calendar about a year and a half in advance. The committee decided that the snow day for Memorial Day was a good idea, so then they added the half-day for school. But, with the amount of snow we had this year, they had to revise the schedule.

State law requires schools to start on the 4th Monday in August, and over the last two years, that Monday has been falling later in the month on the calendar. So they've had to push the end of school to the first week of June.

Is this a problem? Should your children go to school on a national holiday?
