Unless you have served in the military, it's hard to grasp what those brave men and women go through.  Most, if not all, come home with scars-physically and mentally.  Thanks to the Thomas E. Creek VA Medical Center, veterans will now have a place to get all the help and support they need.

I have the utmost respect for people who serve in the military.  I think they deserve special treatment and all the help they need.  And it truly breaks my heart to see a homeless vet.  Thanks to the local VA hospital, they are finally getting the help they need.

This morning the Thomas E. Creek VA Medical Center debuted a 21,000-square-foot building that will house expanded mental health services.  This means more help will be available for the Vets who need it.

After serving, especially during wartime, these brave men and women come home with mental and physical scars.  I have known several who try and drown their sorrows with drugs and alcohol.  But it never helps.

The VA's goal with the new center is to help rehabilitate all veterans physically, emotionally, and mentally.  They will be helping with post-traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse.  No judging, just help.

They will also help them return to society in a positive way.  Amarillo has about 455 homeless people and the majority of them are retired vets.

The VA wants to help them obtain jobs and find a place to live.  They are working with a special division of the federal Housing and Urban Development to help the vets with rent vouchers.

The Amarillo VA Hospital has done so much for military vets that they are seeing them pour in from all over the country seeking help.  They will accept all veterans, not judgement.  Their program differs than others because they do not require sobriety first.  They focus on housing first and help no matter what.

After everything they have done for this country, they deserve this and so much more!
