The Wings of Freedom Tour Is Giving Amarillo A Rare Look Into WWII Planes

The Collings Foundation

There are very few people left that clearly remember World War II, but that doesn’t mean we don’t still care.  The people in the Amarillo area are getting a rare chance to get an up close and personal experience with some WWII aircraft.

The Wings of Freedom Tour has landed in Amarillo!  That’s right, Rick Husband International Airport is hosting a three day tour.  The Consolidated B-24 Liberator, the North American P-51 Mustang and one of ten flying Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses will all be on hand for tours and, for a fee, flights.

Also making an appearance is the Caribou C-7.  This plane was used during the Vietnam War.

This is a perfect opportunity to remind yourself and your children of the past.  Not often do we get to experience history this way and we often forget what the US has been through.  Without these planes, we might have lost the wars and our freedom could have been lost.

If you are interested in seeing the planes, they will be on display until noon on Wednesday, April 11th.  You can see them at TAC Air at Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport.  You can tour the planes 12 noon to 5 p.m. on Tuesday and 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday.  It will cost $12 for adults, $6 for children under the age of 12 and free for WWII veterans.

The Collings Foundation

If you are interested in flights aboard the aircraft, be ready to fork over some money.  Flights on the B-17 or B-24 are $425 per person.  Stick time in the P-51 fighter is $2,200 for 30 minutes and $3,200 for one hour.  Flight tours are scheduled around the ground tours.  You can contact The Collings Foundation to make a flight reservation.

This is a rare opportunity that you should take advantage of.
