Tim McGraw is on top of the world with a new record deal, a new album coming out, an upcoming tour and a new lease on life, thanks in part to giving up drinking. In a candid new interview, the 45-year-old singer says he gave up alcohol for his family.

"I drank a lot from my point of view and I needed to stop," McGraw tells People magazine. "I felt quitting was something I needed to do. I didn't feel I had any moral high ground with my kids in the long run."

McGraw gave up drinking five years ago, and in a quest to improve his overall quality of life, he took up intense workouts. He says that helps when it comes to performing live, which he'll do a lot this year -- both with wife Faith Hill at their Vegas residency, and on his own upcoming Two Lanes of Freedom Tour.

"Working out is a great way to go out on stage," the star states. "When I hit the stage, my adrenaline is going and I'm ready."

When McGraw isn't occupied with recording and touring, he and Hill try to balance their career obligations with quality time with their three daughters. "I want to enjoy my career and having my family," he states. "I have a busy life, but it is a fulfilling life."

Tim McGraw is slated to release 'Two Lanes of Freedom' on Feb. 5.
