Amid the myriad of speculation and dead horse meme-bashing, yesterday saw HBO’s ‘True Detective’ season 2 rumor mill circling Vince Vaughn as its latest claim, adding fuel to the fire of reported series stars Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch. Now, with an irritatingly endless wall of silence rivaling ‘Star Wars 7,’ HBO is leveled with yet more ‘True Detective’ casting talks from the likes of ‘Mad Men’ maven Elisabeth Moss, and genre favorite Michelle Forbes, among a treasure trove of new casting details.

Where The Wrap’s report on Vaughn’s supposed casting also apparently confirmed a recent breakdown of the ‘True Detective’ season 2 character roster, the outlet now claims that Moss will call on her ‘Top of the Lake’ detective skills, or is at least “being eyed for” the role of Ani Bezzerides, a tough, small-town Monterey sheriff with gambling and alcohol issues. Though none of these roles have yet been cast, Bezzerides supposedly reports to Sheriff James O'Neil and Deputy Sheriff Marla Simenon, while her partner Elvis Ilinca may be nursing a crush on her.

Not enough? Well, Ani also reportedly has “a hippie-type father who was absent when she was growing up, as well as a younger sister who isn't afraid to show off her body. She's also looking into the disappearance of a former classmate's sister.” All told, here’s how The Wrap suggests ‘True Detective’ season 2 will follow the Emmy-nominated Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson’s 17-year tale:

The second season of “True Detective” will follow the death of Ben Caspar, the corrupt city manager of a fictional California city who's found brutally murdered amid a potentially groundbreaking transportation deal that would forever change freeway gridlock in the state. Three law enforcement officers from different cities and branches of the government are tasked with finding out who did it. They soon discover their investigation has much broader and darker implications than they initially thought.

Caspar's 52-year-old corpse is found on a lonely stretch of Pacific Coast Highway near Big Sur — his eye burned out, genitals cut off and satanic symbols etched on his chest. It turns out he had a penchant for rough sex and may have been involved in the occult.

While we're at it, 'Orphan Black,' 'True Blood,' 'The Killing' and 'Battlestar Galactica' star Forbes’ role has less confirmation around it, but is speculated to be that of either ex-wife to Colin Farrell’s character, and a survivor of sexual assault, or the villainous Vaughn’s “charming but mercurial” wife. Granted, the latest rumors are more or less what we’ve heard in recent weeks, but for clarification’s sake at least, worth noting is that Farrell would supposedly play damaged, corrupt and anger-managing coke-head detective Ray Velcoro.

Kitsch is reportedly the frontrunner for disgraced California Highway Patrol officer Paul Woodrugh, A 28-year-old military vet put on leave after soliciting oral sex from a girl he pulled over for drunk driving. The character reports to Commander Floyd Heschmeyer, and has a Latino girlfriend he breaks up with upon being assigned to the Caspar investigation.

During their TCA press tour panel, HBO executives claimed that we'd have at least some announcement of show's four leading roles within the week, while series creator Nic Pizzolatto insisted separately that no casting had yet taken place. The new California-set season of 'True Detective' will also have more than one director, following season 1 helmer Cary Fukunaga's exit from the series, though no official names have been revealed. We have our own ideas about potential talent ‘True Detective’ season 2 might cull, in addition to everything we already know about the next cycle.

Look, we’re taking every ‘True Detective’ season 2 report with a modicum of salt until HBO steps up to confirm any major details, though we're at least happy to finally have some women rumored for the roles, especially after the first season's blind spot. What do you think, though? Would Elisabeth Moss, Michelle Forbes, or even Vince Vaughn make suitable choices for the second season of HBO’s ever-buzzing detective drama? What do you want to see from ‘True Detective’ season 2, presumably premiering in 2015?
