Album Spotlight: Lady Antebellum, ‘Golden (Deluxe Edition)’

Golden Deluxe
Capitol Nashville

The deluxe edition of ‘Golden,’ Lady Antebellum‘s fourth studio album, includes three previously unreleased songs plus three acoustic versions of well-known hits. All six fit within the context of the original 12 tracks. ‘Golden’ is still the most organic album the trio has released to date.

‘Compass’ is the current radio single, but ‘And the Radio Played’ has the potential to become a hit. Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott namecheck over a dozen radio hits from the last 30 years during this mid-tempo love ballad, but the real spark comes from the story told in between:

Bobby was the first boy that I ever kissed / I can still taste the root beer on his lips / We turned up the stereo from that bedroom / Climbed through the window and make out on the roof,” Scott sings during the second verse.

‘Life as We Know It’ is standard Lady A material, with the two singers harmonizing for much of the four-minute ballad. This deluxe version closes with a piano-heavy version of ‘Need You Now,’ a remarkably sensitive, acoustic version of ‘Just a Kiss’ and an acoustic take on ‘I Run to You.’ Of the three, ‘Just a Kiss’ is the most memorable, but all are worth appreciating if the mood is right.

Nothing from this new version of ‘Golden’ is going to bring a party to life. It’s more a chance for the three to reflect as artists, not country music superstars.

Tracks to Remember: ‘And the Radio Played,’ ‘Just a Kiss’

Can We Get a Shoutout?: We count almost 30 song titles dropped into the melody of ‘And the Radio Played.’ Among the modern artists who’ll enjoy a nod: Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Jason Aldean, George Strait and Luke Bryan.

Did You Know?: After performing with Stevie Nicks for a ‘CMT Crossroads’ special, the Fleetwood Mac singer sent Scott’s daughter a pair of ruby slippers. Hillary quickly tweeted a picture to fans. Nicks hasn’t stopped with the gifts since!
