In 2022, crime was high, it seemed every time you turned around, someone was getting shot or killed, or a business was getting broken into.

Looking at 2023, the crime rates in Amarillo have dropped.  Each year the Amarillo Police Department releases an annual report to the public, and the preliminary numbers were recently released.

Crime is down 5%

Amarillo has seen a drop in homicides, rapes,  and aggravated assaults.  Although robbery didn't decrease, it only saw a small increase.  If this trend continues, 2024 will also see a large drop in crime rates in Amarillo.

Not only was there a decrease in violent crime in Amarillo, but property crime also saw a significant decrease.

Property crime was down 11%

Burglary was down almost 20%, while stolen vehicles were down 27%.   Cases of arson dropped by 12 cases in 2023 from 2022.

This is great news for Amarillo.   The citizens of Amarillo were getting exhausted from hearing about the deaths, crimes, stolen cars, and fires set on purpose, and finally is seeing a great change in 2023.

The Amarillo Police Department is doing its best to help prevent these crimes.  Our APD officers put their lives on the line every day and their hard work on keeping Amarillo safe is showing in a big way.

Let's hope that this downward trend in crime in the Yellow City will keep going down, down, and down.

Amarillo is a great city to live in and raise a family.   With less crime, it's an even better place to live.
