New Mexico Is Super Close to Legalizing Recreational Weed

It was reported earlier this week that a loophole in the New Mexico medical marijuana system had been closed. Here's a quick recap of what you USED to be able to do.

• You could go online and get a medical marijuana card from California.
• That card would then be accepted in New Mexico.

Pretty cool, right? Well, that loophole recently got shut down. The medical marijuana card you have needs to match the state ID that you have. Womp womp. Sorry West Texas folks.

Well, it looks like things might be getting easier to buy weed in New Mexico. There are a couple of marijuana related bills that are about to reach the governor of New Mexico's desk. Both bills have been praised by the governor. The first one would expunge the records of people who have been arrested on marijuana related charges that would no longer be illegal. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said:

This important legislation accompanies the legalization of cannabis and will ensure that New Mexico ends the harmful long-term impacts of cannabis conviction records, enabling New Mexicans to build better futures.

NOW, for the big news. The second bill is one that would decriminalize recreational marijuana for anyone over 21 in the state of New Mexico. The Cannabis Regulation Act would make it so retail sales of the product would begin no later than April 1, 2022. Yeah, exactly one year from today. It also "sets up licensing and regulation procedures for the production and sales of cannabis products and adds a tax for retailers."
