‘The Bourne Legacy,’ ‘The Campaign,’ ‘Childrens Hospital’ — 10 Things to Check Out This Week

Universal Pictures

Expect big action and big laughs this week as the ‘Bourne’ franchise is reborn, Will Ferrell and Zack Galifianakis butt heads, and two quirky Adult Swim shows head back to the tube. Read on for our list of 10 things to check out this week in the world of entertainment and pop culture.

The Bourne Legacy

Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass leave the ‘Bourne’ franchise in the capable hands of star Jeremy Renner (‘Avengers’) and writer-director Tony Gilroy (‘Michael Clayton’), who also penned the first three ‘Bourne’ flicks.  This new adventure, opening Friday, finds Renner’s black ops agent running for his life from a government shadow agency that wants to see him dead. Sound familiar? Yeah, we thought so too, but the ‘Bourne’ movies are praised for their well-crafted action, relentless suspense, exhilarating stunts and fresh approach to the action genre. We’re looking forward to seeing how well this new team succeeds with continuing the franchise.

Red Hook Summer

Spike Lee’s controversial coming of age story hits theaters on Friday. Lee returns to Brooklyn, where he’s filmed some of his best work (‘She’s Gotta Have It,’ ‘Do the Right Thing,’ ‘Clockers’), to tell the story of an Atlanta teen living with his grandfather, a charismatic preacher named Da Good Bishop Enoch Rouse, in Red Hook. Reviews for this one have been mixed, but there’s always something fresh and powerful to be gleaned from Lee’s more personal films.

The Campaign

Will Ferrell and Zack Galifianakis go head to head in this political satire directed by ‘Austin Powers’ and ‘Meet the Parents’ helmer Jay Roach, opening Friday. The biggest laughs are sure to come from Ferrell and Galifianakis’ ad-libbing, camera mugging and, of course, baby punching.

Nitro Circus: The Movie

The “action sports collective” of unclean stuntmen “make dreams and nightmares come true” in this high-adrenaline 3D theatrical release, opening Wednesday. We dig ‘Nitro Circus’ for their complete disregard for personal safety in the pursuit of awesomeness.

Marley on Blu-ray

This well-received documentary about Bob Marley’s life, music and universal appeal hits DVD and Blu-ray on Tuesday. Directed by Kevin McDonald (‘The Last King of Scotland’) and co-produced by Marley’s son Ziggy, ‘Marley’ celebrates the legendary reggae musician’s huge impact on the culture but doesn’t shy away from examining the darker and more controversial aspects of Marley’s story.

Spaceballs 25th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray

Yes, it’s yet another ‘Spaceballs’ home video release, but this one offers five hours of special features, including a new interview with director Mel Brooks who calls the film his attempt to “destroy” the space opera genre. Get your Schwartz on this Tuesday.

Full Metal Jacket 25th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray

Relive Stanley Kubrick’s tense and spectacular war movie masterpiece with this new two-disc Blu-ray release, available on Tuesday. The release features superior picture and sound plus commentary from stars including Vincent D’Onofrio, Adam Baldwin and R. Lee Ermey.

Adult Swim

Childrens Hospital

Season four of Adult Swim’s bloody good hospital set satire premieres Tuesday night. Haven’t seen the show yet? Stream few insane episodes at Adult Swim.

NTSF:SD:SUV

Comedian Paul Scheer continues to skewer the crime procedural drama with Thursday’s season premiere of Adult Swim’s ‘NTSF:SD:SUV,’ the perfect ‘Childrens Hospital’ sister show.

H+

‘X-Men’ director Bryan Singer produces this big budget sci-fi web series about an innovative technology that changes the world … and totally kills a lot of people. ‘H+’ looks incredibly ambitious and geeky. We’re looking forward to the premiere, Wednesday on YouTube.
