What Is Three Kings Day?

While many in the US celebrate holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years during the cold seasons, there’s a quite unknown holiday that’s recently taking more notice.

The holiday is Three Kings Day, which was this January 6th. This is the celebration of when the three Magi arrived bearing gifts for the baby Jesus. The Three Kings are depicted as riding on a horse, camel and elephant on their way to the nativity site. This holiday is mostly celebrated in Latin countries such as Mexico and  the Caribbean. It’s sometimes even more important than Christmas itself to the Latin culture. Christmas is still celebrated, but it’s not until Three Kings Day where gift giving and the main celebration is done.

One of the traditions of this holiday include making “la Rosca de Reyes” which is basically a ring-shaped sweet bread with a baby Jesus figurine hidden inside. Whoever finds the figurine in their slice of bread has to make food for their guests on February 2nd. Roscas are sometimes filled with cream cheese or caramel. My family and I also celebrated Three Kings Day as we still consider it an important part of our culture and another special holiday were we can be surrounded by close family and friends.

If any of you are interested in making or learning how to make a Rosca, click on the video down below.
