The Amarillo Police department have received several calls from people stating that they have been receiving phone calls for outstanding taxes.

Apparently these spammers are spoofing the Amarillo Police Department's phone number. Spoofing the number just means that these scammers have altered the number they are using so that is shows up on the caller ID as a local number and in this instance the APD number.

The scammers are telling people that they will be arrested if they don't pay their outstanding taxes over the phone.

Keep in mind the Amarillo Police Department will never call citizens to enforce payment on any outstanding IRS taxes.  The IRS will not call and demand immediate payment over the phone for owed taxes.  The IRS sends letters in the mail before ever contacting anyone about their taxes.

As a rule, never give out your personal information to anyone who calls and demands payment.  Always, research and be smart about receiving strange phone calls.

Tell the person on the other line that you will call the company directly and then hang up.  Then follow up with them to let them know the call you received.  In this instance you can always call the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040.

If you have been scammed and have given your information out and you have lost money because of it you can call the police department and make a report.

If you have received one of these calls or any weird calls that demand money and payment over the phone or calls that seem like scams you can contact the Federal Trade Commission.
